Iona Whittaker is an art writer and editor. Originally from London, she lived and worked in Beijing from 2009 – 2014, and is currently based in New York.
Publications include Spike Art Quarterly, Frieze, Art Review, Artforum, Art in America, LEAP, Art Asia Pacific, Surface and The Art Newspaper. Catalogue texts include Liu Xiaodong (Lisson Gallery, 2013), Kate Downie (Royal Scottish Academy, 2013) and Qiu Xiaofei (Pace Gallery, 2014). The Unfinished Collection, an independent book commissioned by the DSL Collection, was published in November 2012. Further publications are a monograph on the photographer Chen Wei (Thircuir, 2013) and an introduction to the Stars artists (Hadrien de Montferrand Gallery, 2013).
Iona was Managing Editor at Rhizome journal at the New Museum in New York (2014-2016), and New York Editor and Director at Ran Dian magazine (2014-2017). Current freelance projects include writing and copyediting at David Zwirner Gallery and texts for Hyundai Motor sponsored art projects at LACMA and Tate Modern.
